A newly constructed plaza has opened in downtown Las Cruces. The opening of the Main Street Plaza commenced this past weekend, September 16-17th, and intentionally overlaped with Saturday morning’s weekly Farmer’s Market.
There was an afternoon of festivities that culminated in a movie in the park, starting around 7:30 P.M. on Saturday. The entire afternoon’s events were be open to the general public.
“We see this as a community celebration, in honor of the opening”, said David Dollahon Interim City Manager of Las Cruces. “Everyone’s invited to help celebrate.”
For actual an dedication ceremony, there was a small ceremony from 2:00 to 2:30 P.M. This included a ribbon cutting ceremony coupled with various dignitaries being invited and a few that spoke, as well. Local bands and folklorical gropus performed throughout the afternoon as well.
Construction of the new plaza began last July in 2015.
Some of the new additions to the project included the plaza itself, the construction of Organ Ave. and Plaza Place, which are two side streets (Organ Avenue connects to Main St.)
There is also now a main stage, a sundial in the center, and new landscaping, lighting, and seating. There is also a water splash pad at the north end by the stage.
The entire area that was constructed is in an area that is adjacent to the city’s Municipal Court.
“The creation of the plaza has been part of our long range downtown master plan”, Dollahon said. “We feel as a business community, the downtown area has been anticipating this for a long time. It will create a place for people to meet and be a part of community activities and we feel it will further support the business community.”
Every Wednesday and Saturday morning, the Las Cruces Farmers and Craft Market showcases the finest in local handmade crafts, photography, jewelry, fresh produce and more. Other attractions include the Rio Grande Theatre where local and guest musical and theatre performances show regularly and the Main Street Bistro and Ale House.
